In August 2026, the gemstone world received remarkable news: Ethiopia has officially been confirmed as a new source of Paraíba tourmaline.
For a gemstone whose story has been defined by rarity, extraordinary colour and very few known deposits, this is a significant development.
On 27 August 2026, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the Gübelin Gem Lab jointly announced that, following independent scientific investigations, copper-bearing tourmalines from a newly reported Ethiopian deposit meet the widely accepted definition of Paraíba tourmaline.
For gemologists, collectors and jewellery designers, the discovery opens an entirely new chapter in the history of one of the most fascinating coloured gemstones in the world.
What makes a Paraíba a Paraíba?
Paraíba tourmaline entered the gemstone world relatively recently.
The legendary material was first discovered in the late 1980s near São José da Batalha, in the Brazilian state of Paraíba. The stones immediately attracted attention for colours that seemed almost illuminated from within: intense electric blue, turquoise and blue-green hues unlike those traditionally associated with tourmaline.
The secret behind that extraordinary colour was chemistry.
Paraíba tourmalines contain copper as an important colouring element, sometimes interacting with manganese. It is this unusual chemistry that can produce the vivid blue-to-green appearance that has made exceptional Paraíba specimens so desirable.
Later, copper-bearing tourmalines were discovered in Nigeria and Mozambique.
And now, more than three decades after the original Brazilian discovery, Ethiopia has joined this very small group of known Paraíba-producing origins.
Why the announcement of 27 August matters
Rumours about copper-bearing tourmalines from Ethiopia had been circulating within the gemstone trade during the first half of 2026.
But rumours are not gemology.
Before formally recognising a new geographical origin, laboratories need reliable reference specimens, documented provenance and extensive analytical data.
Gübelin Gem Lab first encountered unusual Paraíba tourmalines in May 2026. Their chemical composition did not correspond to the laboratory’s existing reference material from Brazil, Mozambique or Nigeria.
The laboratory subsequently assembled approximately 300 rough and faceted specimens from several independent sources, including material obtained in Ethiopia through direct access to the local supply chain.
GIA independently began examining Ethiopian material in June and later studied a parcel containing more than 100 rough and faceted samples.
The two institutions conducted their investigations independently.
Their conclusion was the same:
Ethiopia is a new source of copper-bearing tourmaline that meets the accepted definition of Paraíba tourmaline.
This independent confirmation is particularly important because it gives the new material scientific credibility and provides laboratories with the reference data required to distinguish Ethiopian origin from the previously established sources.
What does Ethiopian Paraíba look like?
This may be one of the most intriguing aspects of the discovery.
The Ethiopian deposit is already showing considerable colour diversity.
Material examined by GIA and Gübelin includes:
blue · bluish green · violet · purple
with some colourless areas also observed in rough material.
Some specimens show pronounced colour zoning, while certain blue and greenish-blue crystals can visually recall the celebrated Brazilian material.
The German Gemmological Association has also reported that some Ethiopian crystals are remarkably reminiscent of tourmalines from the historic Batalha deposit in Brazil.
But visual similarity does not mean identical origin.
The Ethiopian material possesses its own distinctive chemical fingerprint.
Ethiopian versus Brazilian Paraíba
The comparison is inevitable.
Brazil remains the birthplace of Paraíba tourmaline and the source that established the gemstone’s mythology.
Exceptional Brazilian stones — particularly those displaying highly saturated electric or “neon” blue colours — remain extraordinarily rare. Their historical provenance, limited production and scarcity give them a position in the collector market that cannot simply be replicated by the discovery of another deposit.
Ethiopian Paraíba, however, is scientifically fascinating precisely because it combines the characteristic copper-bearing chemistry of Paraíba tourmaline with its own identifiable geological signature.
Researchers have found elevated concentrations of elements including vanadium, lead and gallium in the Ethiopian material. These characteristics are sufficiently distinctive to help laboratories separate Ethiopian stones from Paraíba tourmalines originating in Brazil, Mozambique or Nigeria.
So although two stones may share the Paraíba designation — and may even appear remarkably similar to the eye — their geological stories remain different.
And in important gemstones, origin is part of the story.
Does Ethiopian Paraíba have the same value as Brazilian Paraíba?
Not necessarily.
The word Paraíba identifies an exceptional category of copper-bearing tourmaline, but it does not make every Paraíba equal.
Value depends on a combination of factors including:
colour saturation and hue, luminosity, clarity, size, cut, treatment status, laboratory documentation, rarity and geographical origin.
The finest Brazilian Paraíba tourmalines have decades of established provenance and extreme scarcity behind them. That historical premium is unlikely to disappear simply because a new source has been discovered.
Ethiopian material is entering the market at a completely different moment: the beginning of its history.
And that is exactly what makes it so interesting.
Could Ethiopian Paraíba become important for collectors?
Potentially, yes — but it is far too early to predict where the market will settle.
A newly recognised gemstone deposit normally passes through several stages. The trade first tries to understand the quantity and consistency of production. Laboratories build larger reference databases. Dealers establish quality categories. Designers begin working with the material. Collectors identify the characteristics they consider most desirable.
Only with time does a mature pricing hierarchy emerge.
For Ethiopian Paraíba, several questions remain open.
How large is the deposit?
How consistent will production be?
How frequently will it produce exceptional neon-blue or blue-green material?
Will significant clean stones be available?
And, perhaps most importantly, how rare will the finest Ethiopian material prove to be once the deposit is better understood?
These questions cannot yet be answered.
What we can say is that the appearance of an entirely new, scientifically distinguishable Paraíba origin is an important event in the coloured gemstone world.
A new origin does not diminish the Brazilian legend
There is another interesting consequence.
The Ethiopian discovery does not necessarily reduce the importance of Brazilian Paraíba.
It may do the opposite.
As the Paraíba family becomes better understood, origin becomes increasingly meaningful.
A collector can now encounter Paraíba tourmalines from Brazil, Mozambique, Nigeria and Ethiopia — each with a different geological history, chemical profile, availability and market position.
The original Brazilian material remains connected to the extraordinary discovery that introduced copper-bearing tourmaline to the world.
Ethiopia represents something different:
the beginning of a new provenance.
Why certification will matter more than ever
With another recognised geographical source entering the market, laboratory documentation becomes increasingly important.
GIA has stated that it can now identify Ethiopia as an origin on its Tourmaline Identification and Origin Reports.
For significant stones, particularly those offered as Brazilian or Ethiopian Paraíba, an authoritative laboratory report can therefore become an essential part of understanding what one is acquiring.
Colour can seduce the eye.
Science tells us where that colour came from.
