Building Stronger Bridges: Rethinking the Relationship Between Designers and Manufacturers in Dubai

At DONYDO, jewellery has always been more than decoration. It is intention, craftsmanship, relationship, and responsibility. Every piece we create is the result of collaboration — between design, materials, artisans, and production partners. Over time, these collaborations have shaped not only my brand, but also my understanding of the wider jewellery ecosystem in Dubai.

In recent months, I have been reflecting deeply — both as a designer and as General Secretary of the Dubai Business Group for Gold & Jewelry Designers — on how our industry can become stronger, fairer, and more resilient. Creativity is the soul of what we do, but creativity needs a structure that protects value, builds trust, and ensures professionalism across the supply chain.

These reflections led me to share with the Board a proposal for an Official Collaboration Framework between Designers and Manufacturers — not as a set of rules imposed from above, but as a foundation for more respectful, transparent, and stable partnerships.

Why this matters today

Dubai is a global hub for gold and jewellery, attracting talent, craftsmanship, innovation, and investment from around the world. Yet, like many creative industries, our sector still relies heavily on relationships rather than shared standards. Relationships are powerful — but when expectations are not clearly aligned, they can also lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and inconsistency.

My intention is not to limit creativity or freedom. On the contrary, I believe that when designers and manufacturers operate within a clear, fair, and transparent framework, creativity can thrive in a healthier and more sustainable way.

A framework based on trust and professionalism

The idea I proposed is built around a few key principles:

  • A structured accreditation system for manufacturers, based on clear and transparent criteria.
  • Shared standards of conduct, quality, and governance that apply to all collaborations.
  • Evidence of financial and operational capacity to support production commitments.
  • A common framework agreement offering baseline protections to all designers.
  • Formal recognition of the Group’s role through an access fee that supports collective initiatives for the industry.

Equally important, this framework is not one-sided. Designers who choose to participate would commit to a minimum one-year collaboration with accredited manufacturers — but only after a fair and transparent process that includes multiple samples, comparable quotations, and full clarity on costs and timelines from the very beginning.

From friction to clarity

On a personal level, this proposal comes from years of experience working at the intersection of design and production. I have seen how strong professional relationships can become fragile when expectations are unclear or when there is no shared reference point.
My hope is to replace friction with clarity, uncertainty with trust, and purely transactional interactions with long-term partnerships rooted in mutual respect.

A collective vision for Dubai’s jewellery future

This initiative is not about control or bureaucracy. It is about collective strength — elevating Dubai’s jewellery industry, protecting creative work, and building a more mature, professional, and sustainable ecosystem where both designers and manufacturers can thrive.

At DONYDO, we believe in jewellery with purpose — and that purpose goes beyond the pieces we create. It includes how we work together, how we treat one another, and how we shape the future of our industry.

I invite designers, manufacturers, and industry professionals to reflect on this vision and engage in open dialogue. Only through collaboration can we build a stronger, more ethical, and more innovative jewellery ecosystem in Dubai.

Always with love,

DONYDO
